Homecare: Dementia is a catch-all term for conditions that impair brain functions like reasoning, memories, and decision making.
Homecare is a great source to help you navigate all types of dementia. There are several types of dementia. Learn more about them.
#1 – Alzheimer’s Disease
Over six million people in the U.S. have Alzheimer’s disease. It’s the most common type of dementia and accounts for as many as 80 percent of dementia diagnoses. Someone with Alzheimer’s loses cognitive function for years, sometimes living as long as 20 years after learning they have the disease.
#2 – Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
TBI occurs when injuries damage the brain. Over time, it can lead to issues with cognitive function. You can suffer TBI in a car accident, playing sports, or falling and hitting your head. Approximately 2.87 million people went to the hospital following a TBI in 2014.
#3 – Lewy Body Dementia
Around 1.4 million Americans have Lewy body dementia. It’s usually seen between the ages of 50 and 85. One of the first signs of Lewy body dementia is sleep issues like talking or moving around while dreaming.
#4 – Parkinson’s Disease
Around one million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with Parkinson’s. It’s more common in men than women. Tremors, muscle rigidity, and issues with gait and mobility are key signs.
#5 – Vascular Dementia
Vascular dementia occurs when there is a block or reduction of blood flow to the different areas of the brain. With vascular dementia, disorientation, confusion, changes in ambulation, and difficulties with speech usually happen over time. It’s estimated that up to 10 percent of all dementia cases are vascular dementia.
#6 – Frontotemporal Dementia
Frontotemporal dementia occurs in around 10 percent of dementia cases. It’s estimated that an average of 55,000 Americans has this type of dementia. Decision-making skills, personality changes, and worsening social behaviors are some of the noticeable differences.
#7 – Mixed Dementia
Some people have more than one type of dementia at the same time. These cases are categorized as mixed dementia.
#8 – Huntington’s Disease
Huntington’s disease is caused by a defective gene that eventually leads to a breakdown of cells in the brain. Most people develop symbols after their 30th birthday. Involuntary body movements and anger are key signs. In the U.S., around 30,000 people have been diagnosed with Huntington’s.
#9 – Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease
This is one of the more rare brain disorders, with approximately 350 cases per year. The symbols usually appear after the age of 60. Issues with movements, vision, and judgment skills are common signs of the disease
